When I first heard about this series, it was through the movie posters! I was naturally intrigued and wanted so much to watch them. And then I learned that they are actually a series of books being converted into movies. When i was deciding whether to watch the movies or read the books, one of my friends suggested that I read the books first!

I am truly happy that that is what I did. Ever since I was 8, I had the maturity to understand that reading the books transports us completely to the land written into the books rather than watching the movies. Movies are a representation of the imagination of a group of people. Reading the books are playing with my own imagination of the place and the people involved. After the Harry Potter series, this is the series I enjoyed reading as much. I was completely transported to my own imaginative land of Panem and I was myself transformed into the character of Katniss Everdeen!

Story line

I would not want to say anything much about the story line because it is quite hard first of all. The story is set in a post apocalyptic USA where all of human race has come to an end except thirteen districts of people. Each district is dedicated to each kind of work like farming, mining, making jewellery and so on. The thirteen districts are governed by the city called Capitol, where the high people reside! To keep the people of the thirteen districts reminded of who the boss is, they conduct the Hunger Games. Two children from each district are chosen and put together in an arena where they literally had to kill each other until the last child standing is announced the winner. The winner is showered with gifts and their district is gifted with food and provisions for the rest of the year!

Excerpts from the book

Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.

Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when it’s morning again, they’ll wash away
Here it’s safe, here it’s warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.

Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now and live in it forever.

Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire

I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.

Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire

You’re still trying to protect me. Real or not real,” he whispers.
“Real,” I answer. “Because that’s what you and I do, protect each other.

Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.

Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

My suggestion to anyone picking these books is to be patient enough to finish reading the books before watching the movies. Not saying to not watch the movies at all. Jennifer Lawrence has done a truly amazing job with the character of Katniss Everdeen.

Lesson– The true courage lies in looking deep within you and finding the real you!
